Qualified Court Interpreter for the State of Michigan

ATA, MiTiN

Certified ESL/TEFL/TESOL Instructor

Karen, a native of Brazil, has an extensive international living and travel experience, that has allowed her not only to have a deep cultural and international awareness and experience, but also the opportunity to speak and understand several languages (Portuguese, English, German, Italian, among others).

In addition to living in the US and Brazil, both as a child and as an adult, she has also lived in Italy, Czech Republic and Germany. She has developed an interest in understanding how languages came to exist and evolved, how history, geography and time have had an impact on them. This led her to also be interested in the art of translation and interpretation.

After graduating from one of the top law schools in Brazil, Karen started working together with an English↔Portuguese certified translator from Brazil. With a 15+ years of experience in the area of translating, she is also currently the only qualified Portuguese↔English court interpreter for the State of Michigan. Her experience in interpreting also includes interpreting in the medical and general fields.

Translating and interpreting involve much more than just knowing the words in both languages, but also a deeper understanding about the context in which they are used. With that in mind, Karen is continuously investing in furthering her education. On top of her law degree, Karen also has a Bachelor of Sciences in Psychology and an enriched minor in Business Administration. She has attended Education and German courses at the University of Wyoming, Law, Psychology & Business French courses at Harvard University, and biomedical & health related courses at the local college, including Anatomy & Physiology, Pharmacology and Microbiology.

Karen is an active member of American Translators Association (ATA), and Michigan Translators/Interpreters Network (MiTiN)). She is also an ESL/TESOL/TEFL Certified Instructor with specialization in: "Teaching English to Children", "Teaching Business English", TOEFL and relocation consultant.

That will depend on the complexity and length of the project, as well as the projects already on queue.

Genealogical Research

Helping others unlock their history and family connections

Karen's love for different cultures and languages led her to also be interested in learning more about her own family history.

A personal hobby that has led her to also help many others discover their own historical pasts.

Being fluent in several languages, having a deep cultural and historical understanding and international experience, allows Karen to dig deep into genealogy research to find new connections, new stories, documents and more through in-dept research and DNA triangulation.

Karen is a member of the National Genealogical Society (NGS), Saginaw Genealogical Society, Midland Genealogical Society, Czechoslovak Genealogical Society International, Ontario Genealogical Society and Germanic Genealogical Society.
